DID YOU KNOW????? When it comes to getting cavities, we have all been taught that sweets are bad for your teeth. Sorry, this is still a true statement, but here is something that you may not know: HOW you eat something is just if not more important than WHAT you eat when it comes to getting cavities. Let me explain.

Other than sugars, the real enemy of your teeth is acid. The more acid in your mouth and the longer that its around, the more cavities you can develop, especially between the teeth and around the gums. Our mouths, being the first step in digestion, becomes very acidic when we eat or drink something. It takes the buffers in your saliva about 30 minutes to neutralize the acids in your mouth AFTER you are done eating.

So picture someone who grazes all day on peanuts or snacks.... picture someone who sips on coffee or diet coke every 15 minutes all day. The mouth never has a chance to rid itself of the acids that slowly destroy the teeth. The bottom line is this: whatever you eat or drink (other then water), make sure to finish then wait a least a half an hour before eating or drinking again. Your beautiful teeth will love you for it!

We have always tried to be available for as many people as possible. That's why we are open three nights a week plus Saturdays. This extends to the insurance plans that we contract with. Lets face it, with the economy the way it is, not many of us have the luxury to been able to ignore our insurance plans and pay out of pocket for treatment that would otherwise cost us a considerable amount less if we used our plans the way they were intended: seeing in-network providers.

We have been asked on several occasions by our current patients if we would consider being providers for Aetna. I'm happy to announce that starting Jan. 1, we are now in-network providers with Aetna. Our current patient can start enjoying the savings immediately and others who might not have otherwise been financially able to be patients here can now be a part of our dental family and take full advantage of their Aetna insurance benefits. If you need help figuring out what your coverage is with Aetna or any other insurance plan, please give us a call at 847-695-1300. We are here to help!

Welcome to our new Facebook page. We will be using this tool to keep our patients up to date with the latest in dental news, reviews, specials, and just about anything else noteworthy in the world of dentistry and Fox Valley Dental Care. We hope that you find the entry's worthwhile and engaging. For those of you who are new to our practice or if you are looking for the right dental "fit" for you or your family, allow me to introduce you to our practice. I have been practicing in Elgin for 20 years now (WOW, do I feel old just saying that!) and have found a home here on the west side of Elgin after being on the east side for a good decade. Our practice is located at 74N Alfred off of Larkin, 5 blocks east of McLean. As the "senior" dentist, I'm here most days other than Wednesday and our two associates, Dr. Cathy and Dr. Josephine, are here Thursdays, Fridays, and some Saturdays. We offer all aspects of dental care in a very relaxed, friendly, and caring environment. We are part of many of the major PPO plans and are open three nights and Saturdays each week. If you are looking for a great, progressive yet down to earth dental experience, give us a try. You'll be glad you did. Our web site it www.foxvalleydentalcare.com or www.fvdc.com. Please give us a call (847-695-1300) or send us an email if you have any problems or questions that we would be glad to help you with. Have a great day, Tom Pointner, DDS
